First time reviewing food
I’ve been saying for a year now that I’ll start doing food reviews. Nothing fancy, of course, because I’m definitely not a sophisticated food critic. It’s more about my experience eating food and my overall thoughts.
Alfie’s has been right around my corner for years (literally). Since I switched jobs, I haven’t been near that area that much. Of course, my brother told me he’d been there several times and enjoyed the food. He mentioned that the food was delicious, but I didn’t feel that wow factor when describing the food. Plus, he’s biased; the dude likes everything (when it comes to food).
My husband’s latest obsessions
That same week, he took me back there. He liked their burger so much, and he was dying to take me there so I could try it for myself. We did groceries that Friday evening, brought everything home, and then went straight to Alfie’s. Please keep in mind that this was in late September.
Recently, J. has been obsessed with activemirror., and you guessed it, Alfie’s. Since he’s been doing all these interviews for his job, he went to Alfie’s one night to try one of their burgers, supposedly for research purposes, but I know better. He was just looking for an excuse to eat burgers.
Cozy and yummy
Once I got there, I got this sense that I was home. Maybe it’s because the place isn’t that big, but I liked it. It reminded me of, and I hope that nobody gets offended by this, of MacLaren’s Pub of HIMYM. After Googling it, though, I changed my mind. It was cozy, and the atmosphere was lovely, just like Muziekcafé Oldtimer, a bar below J., and my old apartment in Rotterdam.
We didn’t have a reservation, of course (typical of us). I told J that we probably needed one because I’ve heard that they get swamped. Luckily, they could seat us for an hour until the other party, who had made a reservation like a responsible adult, arrived. Very friendly staff, by the way!
Let’s just order the first thing that catches my eye
I ordered a Monkey Jam Sour because I thought the name was cute, and I like jam (who doesn’t). When I had my first sip, I immediately knew something was wrong. What the hell is Monkey Shoulder anyway? Well, it turned out to be the one drink I don’t drink: scotch. Yes, I had a horrible experience while drinking scotch, and no, I’m not ready to talk about it yet. Not until I make sure that my dad isn’t reading my blog.
Anyway, during my first visit, I ordered the Alfies. I like my burger with all the toppings, but I give J. my pickles (like usual). We had to wait a bit, but boy was the Alfies worth the wait. I was expecting a soggy burger, but the bun held through. It was fresh, juicy, and full of flavor. On the side, I ordered some curly fries, which I drenched in mayo (the Dutch is in me somewhere). I ate all the fries and left maybe a quarter of the burger. J. savored the rest. And to top it all off, we ordered a slice of their homemade carrot cake (which I thought was for a party and wasn’t on sale). The best carrot cake my taste buds ever tasted, and the best part is that it’s completely vegan.
Of course, I went back, are you kidding?
In the first week of October, we went again. I swear it’s that good. I thought I was a big girl and ordered an 18+ milkshake, but I wasn’t experienced enough to handle that sort of shake (no double entendre, I swear). This time, J. convinced me to try their Beyond Burger. J. says you wouldn’t know it’s vegan unless you’re told so. I thought he was exaggerating. Well, he wasn’t because it really did taste like meat. My mouth is watering just by thinking about it. And the best feeling is that I don’t have to feel bad for murdering moo moo’s. I had the curly fries again, this time, J. couldn’t convince me otherwise. Yum, yum. We chatted with Amal, who owns Alfies, and then we left.
We are definitely looking forward to going back. I’m specifically looking forward to Ribs Night on Thursdays. Have you been to Alfies? What is your favorite thing on the menu?
Talk soon!
